The village's origins go back to the ninth century and its connections with the Bishop of Narbonne. Its form is circulade, i.e. it is built in concentric circles for defensive reasons, a testimony to the region's stormy history. The design is clearly visible and is typical of many villages in the Languedoc.
It has a population of 330. It is situated in the first outriders of the Pyrenees chain of mountains at an altitude of 330m (1040ft). It is 12 km from Limoux, 30 km from Carcassonne, 80km from Toulouse and 70km from Narbonne on the Mediterranean coast.
